Can you download movies to kindle fire hd. The pattern for the Baby Surprise Jacket is very heavily copyrighted and so there are no freebie patterns for it. It must be purchased. You are correct about that. Your local library will have knitting books by Elizabeth. Check and you will find that one of them will have the pattern. Pattern: (the infamous) Baby Surprise Jacket. I have a question about the Baby Surprise Jacket. Would it be easy to add a hood to it and do you think it would look.

Hi, I'm in the process of trying the BSJ for the first time and I'm still looking at patterns and trying to find the best yarn anyone has any tips or advice for this project? thx
The best things I did before I knit my first one were: 1. Read through the pattern; mark things to remember 2. Read posts on the BSJ group on Ravelry 3. Print out and read the wiki on the BSJ on Ravelry 4. Believe what everyone says: Have faith in the pattern! Read it and follow it; it may not seem like it's coming out but if you follow the pattern it will! I would say #3 was a HUGE help! I didn't have any problems. (There are also some videos you can watch which were also helpful.) I did make button holes on the first, but on the second, I did the button holes that you make when you are knitting the i-cord bind-off. Awesome!!! The one I made with DK weight was the perfect newborn size. The ones I've made with worsted are great for a bout a year-two years old. I went back and picked up stitches on the wrists and did a ribbing on both sleeves. This has been really great. 1) It gathers the sleeve in for more warmth and 2) It makes it a bit longer so they can wear the sweater longer. I've added a pointed collar to the last 2 since they were for my grandson. I have the yarn and am ready for my fourth for the newest granddaughter. I expect my grandson to wear his again this winter for a winter coat. (We live in Phoenix, AZ.)
Wow Tetaknits!! What a wonderful, helpful post with so much great information! I'm hoping to make one for my new grandson's winter jacket (Dallas), but I was putting it off. Now I have absolutely NO excuse! Thank you!
Wow, Tetaknits, thanks for all the info, I confess, I have never made an EZ pattern. The way she embeds the instructions in her chit chat drive me nuts- they seem clear enough, it I'm also the type of person who hates recipes with the ingredients not listed up front, just dropped into the instructions. Someday I think I'll feel as though I have the patience, but i'm a work in progress.
I have to admit that I bought the pattern from Schoolhouse Press that is just the BSJ (and adaptations for children and adults). There's one version with some of the chitchat and inside there's a 'regular' written version that I used. It has more direct instructions. Glad to help! And the Baby Surprise Jacket group on Ravelry is LOTS of help and great encouragers!
I have made several of these for charity, in all various weights, and you really cant go wrong. A heavier weight works for an older baby or a large baby. Anything but a bulky works fine. I got best results, in my opinion, from the baby weight self patterning yarns. They were so cute. And they would fit a newborn until maybe 6 month old. I also used sport weight and worsted and they were great. Also a boucle, and it was cute but hard to seam. The funnest part is looking at the final pieced, then folding it and seeing it become a jacket.
Thank you all Tetaknits, thanks again your steps are reassuring..I've done some and planning to do the rest now while browsing around I found the Schoolhouse Press Pattern then I read somewhere (not sure where) that there are modified or edited pattern..any ideas?
couldn't find Elizabeth's BSJ Book at B&N but found Surprise Crochet Sweaters for Baby (if anyone's interested) can't wait to start one

At Schoolhouse Press there's a version of the BSJ that Meg Swanson has done. It has the Baby, Child, and Adult versions, both Elizabeth's directions (a bit skimpy) and a version where a bit more direction has been added (what I used), plus lots of pictures and diagrams for things like adding a collar. It's not the one in EZ's book, but a separate BSJ pattern. This version is a lot easier to follow than getting the book that has the pattern in it. http://www.schoolhousepress.com/patte.. Thank you Tetaknits Actually, today I was torn between getting the one you're referring to and Knit One Knit All book which has EZ's BSJ (Edited by Cully Swanson)
It all depends on whether you found her patterns easy to knit from or need a bit of clarification.
If you did get the book, you would have plenty of help from the group. They are always happy to help a 'newbie' through the pattern. :) Baby Surprise Jacket

Here's all the forum threads about it on Ravelry: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/libra..
Good luck! I hope you enjoy knitting this pattern as much as I do! I love seeing something suddenly appear when it doesn't look like anything is really happening. It's a bit of magic. :)

Tetaknits wrote: 'Good luck! I hope you enjoy knitting this pattern as much as I do! I love seeing something suddenly appear when it doesn't look like anything is really happening. She makes everything sound like a piece of cake..I've learned from this part how to appreciate garter stitch more and I'm actually considering the circular shawl; something I'd never dream of trying
